The global oil price has surged recently due to geopolitical conflicts, leading to significant repercussions for the food industry. While the short-term surge in oil prices can be managed, a prolonged increase will likely drive industry restructuring and elevate prices in the long run.

For consumers, the most immediate effect of rising oil prices is the increased cost of fuel for vehicles. Consequently, all transportation-related sectors are grappling with heightened operational costs.

Take, for instance, our company specializing in dry noodles. Despite the fact that our primary raw materials do not directly include crude oil, many agricultural products significantly rely on it, especially fertilizers. The upsurge in oil prices is driving up the costs of essential crops such as wheat, soybeans, and palm oil, which in turn, affects the production costs of dry noodles, a product closely tied to these staple ingredients.

Furthermore, the food industry is intricately linked to the packaging industry. Oil serves as a fundamental raw material for packaging materials like PET (used in plastic bottles and films), aluminum cans, and glass. This close tie dramatically influences packaging costs. For example, in the soft drink segment, PET costs can constitute about 30% of a company's total expenses, and recent surges in PET prices have exceeded 20%, directly squeezing profit margins.

In the short term, businesses are strategizing to manage these rising costs through measures such as price locks, cost reductions, and limited promotions. This approach aims to defer the impact of increased expenses, allowing a wait for either a pricing window for end consumers or a correction in raw material prices. However, if oil prices remain elevated for more than 3 to 6 months, companies will have to pivot from "internal absorption" of costs to passing the rising costs onto the consumer market. This scenario will usher in a new cycle of price adjustments across the industry.

Even in peaceful regions, political and economic turmoil continues to affect the lives of citizens, highlighting the profound implications of global unrest on everyday costs and basic necessities.

Ultimately, we hope for a world marked by peace, free from the ravages of war.
