You are Chinese! —— some tips for the "new Chinese"
The trend of “becoming Chinese” has been all the rage lately, and as someone who has being a Chinese for over 20 years, I’d love to share some habits that are essential to the Chinese lifestyle. Here are a few essential practices to incorporate into the “new Chinese”’s daily routine.
1. Warm Water, Please!
First off, the most basic rule, do not drink cold water, but boiled warm water! This habit goes beyond comfort; it’s deeply rooted in tradition. In reality, our preference for hot water extends beyond cultural traditions and historical roots.
Last century, Chinese government promoted boiled water to combat waterborne diseases, leading to a cultural shift towards health and cleanliness. This movement effectively decreased occurrences of illnesses such as cholera and dysentery. By encouraging drinking boiled water, the government helped instill an emphasis on health and cleanliness that continues to shape daily life in China.

2. Cook the Raw Greens
While many Westerners enjoy a fresh salad, most Chinese people will tell you that cooking is the way to go! We believe that “the right way” is to cook our veggies before diving in. Why? Well, during transport, veggies can pick up some microorganisms, eating raw vegetables is not a good choice for people with sensitive stomachs. Also, steaming and quick stir-frying can maximize mineral retention while enhancing the absorption rate of certain nutrients.

3. Cover That Belly While Sleeping
Have you ever heard that you should cover your belly bottom when you sleep? In Chinese culture, leaving your belly uncovered can lead to catching a cold. But there’s science behind this habit. The abdomen is home to many vital organs, and according to traditional Chinese medicine, the stomach and spleen are quite sensitive to chilly conditions. So, keeping your belly warm while you snooze isn’t just a fuss; it’s a protective measure. After all, who needs a shake-up in the digestive department when you can just tuck in an extra blanket?

4. In sunny day, Sunbathe Your Bedding
While the sunbathing culture thrives in the West, Chinese people have a different adoration for sunlight. On clear, sunny days, we love to be outside, soaking up the sun’s rays in a different way—by airing out our bedding. That’s right! Sunlight is perfect for warming our quilts and tackling germs. This habit is so ingrained that it’s even been featured in our elementary textbooks. In our words, Sun-dried quilts carry the rich scent of sunshine, making people feel happiness.

The viral video “You Are Turning Chinese” by TikTok creator Sherry highlights Westerners embracing Eastern lifestyles—a wonderful cultural exchange. But please don't force yourself to drink scalding water or do things that make you uncomfortable. May you enjoy your experience to become a new Chinese.
